REMEDIALIFE WORKSHOP

WHAT IS THE IMTA
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture represents a polyculture system. In fact, until recently, fish production was carried out under monoculture conditions. Several species are cultivated in the IMTA in such a way that some invertebrates and macroalgae can recycle the waste substances deriving from the culture of vertebrates. (Fish). This new vision has led to the development of the concept of circular economy, in which waste from a production process is used in the production system as raw materials for another production process.

The biomass produced by bioremediation, consisting of bivalve molluscs, annelids polychaetes, porifera (sponges) and macroalgae represents a by product that can find applications in various fields.
The exploitation of the biomass of bivalve molluscs does not need any introduction, they are edible organisms and their exploitation boasts centuries of experience.
All the other proposed organisms do not constitute an edible biomass, but can constitute basic material (row material) for the extraction of active ingredients in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and cosmetics, particularly in relation to porifera and macroalgae.
- Macroalgae can be turned into fertilizer to be used in horticulture.
- The worms polychaetes can instead have also an exploitation as bait for sport fishing and as ornamental animals in the aquarium.
- The biomass of polychaetes and algae can also be used as a component in the production of feed.
The feed for the moment is proposed for use in the same plant, but if the amount of biomass produced will also allow this innovative product can be included in the feed market.
